I love soccer and really wanted to love this book. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy reading it. It was just so short and the stories didn't seem to go anywhere. This guy has played professionally and even met some great folks. But the stories just didn't seem all that book-worthy. I know the author has written a lot about soccer over the years- perhaps some stories from interviews of players, or some other interesting stories like that. The poems in between the anecdotes were also a bit jarring. I humbly consider myself a bit of a poet, even contributing soccer poetry to a sports blog, so I appreciate sports poetry, particularly about soccer. But it seemed somewhat juvenile and out of place. I liked this book, I read it in about 30 minutes. But I felt like I wanted more.Product details

A Soccer Life in Shorts Mark Vincent Lincir 9780615466439 Books Reviews
Enjoyed the book but I wanted to read more. I thought it was longer than it actually was. Written from the heart of a true soccer player.
I came into reading this book with a different perspective; since I was five years old, Mark Lincir has been a positive presence in my life; Mark was actually the person who taught me how to play soccer =). I loved reading this book because it has many short stories about his life and career and how soccer helped make him the person and mentor he is today. For me it solidifies why he has been such a great inspiration in my life. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone because it tells the story of how the experiences of soccer through the thick and thin can positively impact your life. Read it, you won't be disappointed!
Never really got into soccer/football (whatever you want to call it!). After reading this, wish I had!
Mr. Lincir made this a very interesting story. Every young player and their parents needs to read this.
I bought this as a Christmas gift for a soccer fanatic. It was almost too lighthearted and short for this person. He wasn't interested so much in it-- wanted more stories and detail. So the style was off for this person's taste. Was a very easy read.
Before Mark and I started coaching together I thought my soccer days were over. Playing rec, club, high school, and college were enough for me. I didn't care if I ever touched a soccer ball again! He has helped me fall in love with the sport all over again. This easy to read, collection of short stories, poems, and hilarious pictures provide a positive and fun filled trip down memory lane. After reading A Soccer Life in Shorts, I realized all my experiences where truely unique and amazing, no matter the end result. Soccer has shaped my life and who I am today, thanks for the trip down memory lane. I look forward to the many more soccer memories as I move from a player to a coach and I especially look forward to the next collection of short stories/poems/PICTURES from the career and life of Mark Vincent Lincir.
Although I am not a soccer fan (more of a waggonist) Mark's attempt at wit and self-deprecation kept me tuned in until the end. I am glad it did not turn out to be a boring education about the ins and outs of being offside or some other penalty bearing position. I can follow the ball until it gets in the net (or not), hopefully in the net of the other team.
Loved the poetry!
J. E. Powell, Author
Enjoyable, homespun account of a man's 30+ years experience surrounding soccer that reminds me of the experiences our own family had with our younger daughter playing the game. Photos provided of his time as a youth sure brought back the memories. I'll leave you with one last passage that caught my attention, "Do the best you can day in and day out, Loving the game is what it's all about."
